Passing the car theory test is the first stage in becoming a safe driver for life. There's a lot to learn so don't try to learn it all at once. If you try to learn everything the night before your theory test - you will fail for sure.
You will probably already know quite a lot of driving theory, just by watching what’s happening on the roads, a lot of the driver theory test questions are common sense.
However, there are lots of facts and figures you will need to know, as well as the signs and road markings. Trying to learn you theory can be difficult if you haven't started your driving lessons, so for many people its best if they start driving lessons before studying for the Theory Test.
The best advice is to learn the car theory in stages. Buy a copy of the Highway Code and read a bit at a time. When you're out on the roads make sure you know what all of the traffic signs and road markings mean. Any that you don't know you can look up later. Whenever you're out in a car, imagine that you are the driver and be on the look out for driving hazards. See if you can spot hazards before your driver does!

The driving theory test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice questions and the hazard perception test. You need to pass both parts to pass the car theory test. Once you have passed the driver theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test.
Taking your theory test.
A computer is used for both parts of the test, the multiple choice part of the driving theory test is on a touch screen computer and the hazard perception part of the test records your responses when you press the computer mouse button.

If you pass one part and fail the other you'll fail the whole test, and you'll need to take both parts again.

The questions in each multiple choice test vary according to the category of vehicle you're hoping to obtain a licence for, ie a motorcycle theory test will contain specific questions that don't appear in any car theory test.

For the hazard perception test there are no separate versions for different vehicles, each vehicle category takes the same test, however the pass mark is different for different categories of tests.
Part one - multiple choice
Before the test starts you'll be given instructions on how the test works.

You can also go through a practice session of the multiple choice questions to help you get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin.

A question will appear onscreen and will have several answer options, you have to select the answer to the question by touching the screen. Some questions may require more than one answer.

From 3 September 2007 you'll be asked 50 questions in 57 minutes and the pass mark will be 43 out of 50.

You can move between questions and 'flag' questions that you want to come back to later in the test. After the multiple choice part of the theory test you can choose to have a break of up to three minutes before the hazard perception test starts.
Part two - hazard perception
After the break you'll then be shown a short video clip about how the hazard perception part works.

In the hazard perception part of the driving theory test you react by pressing the mouse button for the computer. You will see 14 clips with scenes of every day roads. In each video clip there will be an hazard developing , one of the video clips will have two hazards developing.

You will need to respond early to the developing hazard to achieve a high score. There is a maximum score of five each of the developing hazards.

You will only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard and will not be able to review your answers.

Yoy will need a score of 44 out of 75 to pass mark for the car and motorcycle hazard perception part of the theory test.
At the end of the hazard perception part of the theory test you'll be invited to answer a number of customer survey questions.

You don't have to answer the questions if you don't want to, and any information given is anonymous and confidential. The survey questions don't affect the result of the test.

When you have finished the test you may leave the examination room. Once you have left the room, you'll not be allowed to enter it again. You'll then be given your result by the test centre staff. Maltby driving school provides free driving theory to Rotherham pupils.
