The test routes will start and finish at your local Driving Test Centre and will include a range of traffic and road conditions. An average of about 8-miles will be driven during this period. The driving examiner will test you on all that you have learnt during your driving lessons, testing your ability to drive safely and competently. You will fail the driving test if you commit a serious or dangerous fault, or if you have 15 or more minor driving faults. During the test you will have to show the examiner your ability on two set maneuvers from the following four options
1/ Turning in the road using forward and reverse
2/ Reversing around a left hand corner
3/ Reverse bay park at the test centre
4/ Reverse parallel park behind another car on the road.
The Emergency Stop procedure will be carried out at random. You will be asked to perform an Hill Start and several normal stops at the side of the road, then asked to drive on again.
The Examiner will tell you if you have passed or failed the driving test immediately after the test as finished. If you have failed you will be told where you went wrong and given a printed sheet with the details. Your driving instructor can be present on the test and at the debrief and will advise what further training is required. There must be 10 working days between each test but you can apply for another driving test straight away.
Your driving instructor must be Approved or Licenced ...
Some people learn to drive with friends and relatives, but as roads get busier it’s wise for all learners to have driving lessons with a professional driving instructor. Make sure that your driving instructor is qualified to teach you.
It is illegal for anyone who is not an Approved or Licensed driving instructor to charge a fee for driving lessons. (see below).
Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) have passed a searching examination in order to demonstrate their skills. They are also checked and graded regularly. You can recognize an Approved Driving Instructors because he/she will display a green badge in the driving school car front windscreen. Unlike some of the bigger driving schools, if you have driving lessons in Rotherham with Maltby driving school your driving instructor will be a fully qualified and Approved Driving Instructors ADI DSA not a trainee.
Potential Driving Instructors are in the final stages of training These driving instructors have undergone a minimum required training , but have not yet passed the final qualifying examination. (ability to give instruction).
While Potential Driving Instructors are expert drivers and have learned the basic teaching skills, they have not passed the final exam. You can recognize a Potential Driving Instructors because he/she will display a pink badge in the windscreen.
Your driving instructor's photograph will be displayed on the rear of the pink or green badges. Your driving instructor should behave in a professional manner. Clients will be treated with respect and consideration. The driving instructor will try to avoid physical contact with the client except in an emergency. Whilst reserving the right to decide against giving tuition, the instructor will not act in any way which contravenes legislation on discrimination. Your driving instructor should not shout at you, should not smoke in the driving school car and should not use a mobile phone whilst giving a driving lesson.
Your driving instructor will guide you carefully through your training and ensure that you are fully prepared to drive safely after passing your test. Another valuable reason for taking driving lessons with an Approved Driving Instructor is that you might be able to save money on your motor insurance after taking a post-test Pass-Plus course. If you have an opportunity to practice with friends or relatives you should go for it!
The person who sits with you must be over 21 and have held a driving licence for at least three years.
Ask your instructor what, and where to practice. Although all practice is good for you, beware, it's easy to get a false sense of confidence if you only drive on open roads and at higher speeds.
